Champions For A Comprehensive Clean-up Effort

The area around the Anacostia River in Maryland and the District of Columbia is rapidly becoming an extraordinary cultural, social, and economic resource for the Washington region. However, it cannot reach its potential as long as dangerous chemicals in the riverbed and at certain places along the bank remain unaddressed.

Toxins found in the river have been found to be associated with increased risks of developmental disruption in children, neurobehavioral deficits and cancer.

Over the past twenty years, nonprofit organizations and units of government have been working hard to clean up and restore the Anacostia River’s chemical and biological health. While much has been accomplished, the job won’t be complete until the toxics are dealt with.

United for a Healthy Anacostia River , founded in February of 2014, is a coalition consisting of leading environmental, business and community groups in the District working to educate key audiences in DC about the toxics in the bottom sediments of the Anacostia River and to serve as CHAMPIONS FOR A COMPREHENSIVE CLEAN-UP EFFORT.
